What Is Chaapat ?

The Parsi community loves their sweets and snacks and chaapat or chapat is the perfect amalgamation of both. It is a thin pancake or crepe but made with a few different ingredients. It’s eaten as a snack or breakfast dish.

How Is Chaapat Different From A Crepe Or Pancake ?

Chaapat is similar but slightly different from a crepe or pancake with the texture and ingredients used. Instead of butter, we use ghee. We also add cardamom and nutmeg powder which are ingredients added in almost every Parsi dessert. The texture and size also differ, some folks make their chapats thin but still not as thin as a crepe. Some will make them thicker but not as thick or round as a pancake so small tweaks make it different but essentially, they are the same.

Recipe

Ingredients

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla essence

½ cup powdered sugar

1 tbsp semolina ( rava )

1 ½ cup of flour ( maida )

1 ½ cup of milk

1 tbsp ghee

1 tbsp charoli/ chironji

1 tsp cardamom powder

1 tsp nutmeg powder

Method

In a bowl crack two eggs and whisk them. To this add the vanilla extract and sugar. Mix well till it’s all combined.

Add the semolina, cardamom powder and nutmeg powder and mix well.

Add the flour bit by bit. It will get clumpy that’s ok. Try to incorporate all the flour and add the ghee and mix as best as you can.

Then add the milk in bits. Add half a cup or so at a time so it doesn’t splatter. Once you add all the milk make sure you mix it well till you get a smooth runny batter with no lumps.

Add the chironji and the batter is ready.

In a pan add some ghee and spread it around. Pour one or two ladle fulls of the batter and cook on one side till it’s browned. Flip over and cook for a couple of minutes on both sides till the chapat is ready.

Keep making more chapats till the batter is over.

Serve hot and enjoy.

How Do You Serve Parsi Chaapat ?

You can serve your chapats as is without anything else. Just roll them up and eat them. You could also serve it with honey or powdered sugar or fruit. It’s a great tea time snack and also a fun breakfast.

How Do You Store Parsi Chaapat ?

I do not recommend storing chapats for any time. At the most let it rest on a plate outside at room temperature for a few hours but ideally you should eat them fresh. If you are eating them later, for example you make them in the morning for tea time they should be consumed by the end of the day.
